CO SELECT TEAMS THRIVE IN DOVE VALLEY

The 07 boys and girls Colorado Select teams faced off at Dove Valley at the Rock Cup Tournament this weekend, coming away with 2 tournament championships. Both Director of Player Development Antonia Land and Technical Director Elliot Prost’s teams went 3-0 against opponents in tournament play, bringing victory to the first year of the program.

By uniting clubs across each state, the Rush Select Program began scouting players at U12, as each club’s Technical Directors form pools of players for each age group. In January, there are 4 training camps where nominated players are evaluated by a number of coaches until April, when the roster of 12 is selected. That group is then trained up to compete, providing a challenging atmosphere filled with comradery and talent.

Technical Director Elliot Prost spoke on the commitment these players have for the team, “These players join in addition to playing with their own teams. We train every Sunday, and these players have a desire to come to training. It is similar to an ‘all-star’ team for these players.”

As the group ages, players change and evolve, giving the team the best available pool of players for that age group. The Select team participates in various domestic and international events and tournaments, such as the Rock Cup Tournament.

The Rock Cup brought a unique challenge to the 07 Colorado Select boys and girls teams by providing a test of the countless hours of practice and hard work they had done together as a team throughout the year.

Director of Player Development Antonia Land commented on her player’s development throughout the tournament, “At first the girls were a bit nervous and you could tell they couldn't quite get a rhythm.  But the second half of the first game everything just started to click.  By the last game of the tournament, the girls were playing some great soccer that I could just sit back and enjoy it.”

She continued on the importance of uniting the different parts of Rush in the state, “It was truly something special to know that each branch of Colorado is teaching/educating their players the same way. That is exactly what it means to be part of the Rush; anywhere you go the play is the same.”

As this cycle of 07 boys players in Colorado Select will transition on to the National Select program at U13, the 07 girls will stay to compete in the CO Select Program one more year. As the program continues to evolve, Rush will seek to develop more players for their Select program.
